Some interesting facts about the islands that make up Japan.
  • Japan is an archipelago made up of four main islands and thousands of smaller ones.
  • The largest island is Honshu, where the Capital Tokyo lies. To the north is Hokkaido and to the South is Shikoku, the smallest of the 4 islands. To the South West is Kyushu to the south of which are many smaller islands, including tropical Okinawa and Amami Oshima.
  • Japan is broken up into 8 regions and 47 prefectures. The largest cities are the capital Tokyo (population 12.8 million) and its suburb Yokohama (3.6 million). Osaka is the second most important city and is home to Kansai International Airport. Much of the country's automotive industry is based in Nagoya.
  • 70% of the landscape is inhabited, with the remaining area made up of natural and unspoilt landscapes. Outside of the large urban areas, there is a real sense of Japans unique traditions and culture.
  • The Japanese archipelago is in an area prone to earthquakes. Natural hot springs are common and there are 150 volcanoes, 60 of which are active. The most famous is the inactive Mt Fuji, a hikers・favourite, which reaches 3,776 metres.
