Tokyo Marathon 2011

Tokyo Marathon 2011 offers a wonderful time to both runners and spectators! Not too late to apply for entry.

Starting with its first meet in February 2007, Tokyo Marathon will mark its fifth one on February 27 (Sun.), in the coming year 2011.

Year by year, it is raising its popularity, with perfectly-handled operation into every detail by the Organizing Committee as well as its unique 42.195 km course starting from Tokyo's bustling subcenter "Shinjuku" and ending at its goal at the new Waterfront subcenter "Ariake", via the longtime business & commercial centers "Hibiya/Marunouchi/Ginza" as well as the traditional tourist spot "Asakusa". In fact, this particular course developed for the event, different from other marathon ones which may include monotonous sections somewhere in their courses, keeps bringing in eyes of runners, a wide variety of modern and traditional things of Tokyo, emerging one after another along the course. Therefore, it was and is said to encourage runners to keep their strong motivations to reach the goal, along with great cheering of a crowd of spectators along the roadside.

For spectators from abroad as well, it is a wonderful and exciting fun to cheer up runners including those they know, amid a crowd of local fans of marathon, one of the most favorite sports among us Japanese, at a preferred point to be easily reached by well-developed public transport network of Tokyo.

Meanwhile, reflecting its great popularity, the number of runners was increasing for the fourth straight year since its launch, and reached as many as 32,080 for a full-length marathon and 2,948 for 10km race at the last one in February 2010. Paralleled by its move, as you can imagine, the chance of entry was getting narrowed and in case of the last one, stood at about 12% only. Toward the coming one in February 27(Sun.) in 2011, the same or even more narrowed state continues. During the official registration period from August 1 to 31, 2010 that has just ended, even within one single day or the first day of the registration, August 1, the number of applicants has exceeded the respective quotas (32,000 for a full marathon and 3,000 for 10km race), naturally with an enormous number of applications sent during the remaining period by August 31, added to them. Therefore, entrants will not be decided until after lottery set up on the coming mid-October by the Organizing Committee.
