Onsen

onsen2.jpgRyotemburo (Outdoor Onsen)
Onsen is the Japanese word for natural hot springs found in thousands of towns and villages dotted all across Japan. Although getting naked and bathing together may seem strange to the Western mind, to the Japanese, this is considered one of the most relaxing and worthwhile activities among all ages. Particularly in the winter, onsens are visited by millions of Japanese on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. One of the reasons for the popularity of onsens is because of the many health benefits people enjoy when using them. Soothing your skin, easing stiff shoulders and relaxing your muscles are just some of the effects.

Visiting an onsen is truly one of Japan’s most unique cultural experiences that should not be missed on your trip to Japan.

All of our tours include at least one nights stay at a ryokan which will have an onsen for you to experience (optional).

onsen3.jpgHow to use an onsen

Many onsens in Japan will not have English explanations but once you understand the basic rules, you will be able to relax and enjoy this marvellous experience.

Here are some of our tips for using an onsen:

What to bring

checkokay.jpgLarge towel
Most onsens will provide you with a small towel. This is not really suitable for drying (or hiding) your body after you use the bath.

What not to bring

checkokay.jpgShampoo/toilettries
Most onsens will provide shampoo, conditioner and body soap. The more deluxe ones will even supply you with skin lotions, tooth brush, and hair combs.

Hair Dryers are usually provided

checkokay.jpgSwimsuit
Swimsuits or any item of clothing is not allowed enter the onsen.

Basic Rules

1. Take off your shoes before entering inside. Slippers will be provided.

2. Pay the required fee (prices vary and if staying in a hotel with onsen there is usually no charge)

3. Select the correct door (Male & Female will be separate – usually females have a red or pink curtain, males have blue or a darker colour)

4. Find locker & basket to place your items in and get naked, including all jewelery!!

5. With the small towel provided, walk into the bathing area where you will find a line of showers for washing yourself. Scrub yourself clean from head to toe using the small towel provided. If you don’t want to wash your hair, this is acceptable. Placing your head in the bath is not allowed (favorable) anyway.

6. Select the bath that suits you (assuming there are more than one). If there is the outdoor option, this is always the best especially in cold temperatures. Don’t fall asleep and if feeling dizzy, cool yourself down in the shower area or in a cold bath.

7. Rinse yourself when finished and wipe any excess drips with the small towel before entering the dressing room area.

8. Dry and dress yourself. Some onsens offer a relaxation area away with massage chairs which are add the icing to this heavenly cake!!!
